The Brain and PDA:

 

The amygdala is a small part of the brain with BIG impact in our lives as parents of children and young people with PDA.

It’s an almond-shaped part of the brain somewhere in the centre.

Importantly to us, it’s the primitive part of the brain that controls emotions, the fight/flight/freeze response, and impulsive behaviour.

Now, if you have a child with PDA it’ll be no surprise to you that due to their neurology this part of the brain is highly sensitive and easily aroused.

When a stressful situation occurs brought on by Demand Avoidance, Sensory Input or more, they experience negative feelings like fear, anger, anxiety and distress.

Their brain signals their body to go ‘on alert’ to danger to help them fight off the threat or flee to safety.

The physical sensations of the response are experienced as anger (fight), fear (flight) or an inability to take action (freeze).

But NOW think about yourself as the parent of a child with PDA…

  • Are you planning everything 10 steps ahead to keep things calm?
  • Are you always worried and hyper-alert of the environment your child is in?
  • Do you feel you are walking on eggshells?
  • Do you feel stressed and highly strung just trying to find a way through each day?
  • Do you feel you are going into battle with teachers, GPs, CAHMS etc?
  • Are you eating poorly, caught in addictions, or depressed?
  • Is your immune system depleted?
  • Are you anxious about the doorbell going, the phone ringing, or a relative wanting to visit?
  • Are you often defending yourself or others in the house?

If the answer is YES to some of these and more it is likely that you are also feeling caught in a stress pattern where your brain is hyper-aroused (even if your own neurology doesn’t create that environment and especially if it does!)

Many parents with children with PDA have been really lacking in support often under stressful and confusing circumstances.

I like to bring EFT into this supportive community as a tool for you to help if you feel trapped, caught in a difficult cycle and you’re tired of feeling sad, depressed, anxious, discontent, and unwell.

If you’re fed up with the feeling you don’t have any power over your health and happiness and you’d like to grow, flourish, and thrive.

EFT can help YOU to interrupt that stress pattern of ‘fight-flight-freeze for yourself and release those stress hormones your body has been flooded with, and begin to retrain your body and mind to respond differently!

Most parents I come into contact with have been through very stressful times, and many are still in them.

But my love it’s time to retire from that and relax now!

Research at Harvard University has suggested by observing scans on the relevant parts of the brain that the simple process of EFT appeared to send vibrations along the meridians directly to the amygdala, which actually turned down the fear response, rather like a dimmer switch for our stress!

How cool is that?!!
